Angry Birds in McDonald's China - A Love Story

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, and McDonald's have decided to join forces in the marketing move that probably no one saw coming. "What?" I hear you ask. Yes, you read it right, and no, we're not getting taken over by green alien pigs and Ronald McDonald, at least not yet.

So long story short, if you happen to be eating at a branch of McDonald's in China and you bust out your Angry Birds game on your iPhone, you will be treated to special items and hidden game modes exclusive to that particular branch. In addition, customers are also given the chance to vote for their local or favorite branch to build an actual giant slingshot on, pictured below.

If you're reading all of this still in disbelief, questioning how a $1 iPhone game could have built so much momentum in so little time, don't worry, you are not alone. I myself didn't fully realize the magintude of Angry Birds' fame until I really looked into what they have been up to. Apparently, Rovio has been very busy in the aftermath of their hit success and they are showing no signs of slowing down. In just the span of a couple of years they have successfully achieved hundreds of millions of downloads worldwide, released many different versions of their game, earned millions more in merchandising, talks of a Pixar-esque 3D animation film studio with matching Angry Birds movie (of course) and a Star Wars game deal. So I suppose it really shouldn't be too surprising that they teamed up with McDonald's after seeing all these other achievements. And in the future, when we are bowing down to our alien pig overlords and our only hope is to be saved by plump red, yellow and blue birds and a slingshot, you can tell your grandkids the story that you were there when it happened, and that it all began with this commercial:

    1. It does not seem like a surprise anymore tho. They started with candies in Europe as well, think it was way back in summer.
